James Edwin McGee was the son of James Whitmore McGee and Lettie Yerby McGee and the brother of Samuel F. McGee. He graduated from Oakman High School and later served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He graduated from the University of Alabama and worked at Reynold's Metals in Sheffield as a chemist. He was married to Bettye Kirkpatrick and had 2 sons, James E "Jimmy" McGee, Jr and Michael Patrick McGee.
