Funeral Sevices Held Tuesday For Larry Courneya.
Former Resident Dies In Veterans Hospital.
Funeral services were held in Holy Rosary Catholic church Tuesday morning for Lawrence (Larry) L. Courneya, 54, St. Paul, former Detroit Lakes resident and one-time operator of the city delivery, who passed away in the Veterans' hospital after an illness of nearly a year.
Father Charles Cannon read the requiem mass and burial was in the church cemetery.
A military salute was accorded the deceased by members of the American Legion. Members of the firing squard were Carl Lidstrom, A. A. Berggren, H. C. Culmer and Nels Hoeglund. C. B. Connell served as sergeant and Gordon Borstad sounding taps. Pallbearers were Ed. Beug, Albert F. Anderson, Colmer, Lidstrom, Berggren and Connell.
Courneya was born in Lester Prairie July 18, 1887, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Courneya. He came with his family to Detroit Lakes as a boy and grew to manhood here.
He enlisted in the U. S. army during the World war and served as cook with Headquarters Company, 2nd Dev. B. N., 19th Div., at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He left the service July, 1919.
Returning to Detroit Lakes he operated the city delivery for two years and later ran a lunch shop in the building now occupied by the Waffle Kitchen.
Leaving here about 18 years ago, Courneya since that time had been employed in the St. Paul union depot where he was a train caller.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Helen Samuelson, to whom he was married in 1918; a brother, Archie, Pomona, Calif., formerly of Detroit Lakes; two sisters, Victoria (George) Hamp, Seal Beach, Calif., and Doris (Henry) Weinert, Los Angeles, Calif.
Among those from out of town attending the rites were C. E. Samuelson, Minneapolis and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Courneya of Crookston.
