John Frederick Barber was born on 29 April 1838 in Derbyshire, England, son of John Barber and Ruth (–?–) (listed on his death certificate as "Mrs. Brockleybeast[?])." He came to the United States in 1853 or 1856.

John was married circa 1861 to Catherine Miller. Catherine was born in March 1843 in Indiana.

Barber enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 7th Indiana Cavalry on 3 September 1863 at Noble County, Indiana. He was promoted to a Full Commissary Sergeant prior to vbeing mustered out on 19 September 1865.

On 20 June 1860, John lived with his parents in Steuben, Steuben County, Indiana. He was working as a farm laborer.

In August 1870, John and Catherine and their daughter Mary lived in Steuben, Steuben County, Indiana. John was listed as a "trustee" while Catherine was keeping house. The family owned $2,000 in real estate and $1,300 in personal property.

In June 1880, the couple lived in Paradise township with four daughters0 Mary, Vira, Etta, and Ida. John worked as a farmer while Catherine was keeping house.

In June 1900, the couple lived in Blair township on a farm.

On 3 May 1910, John and Catherine and their daughter Ida lived in Blair township, Grand Traverse County. John was working as a farmer while Ida was a school teacher.

John died on 14 July 1916 in Traverse City from pulmonary oedema. Catherine died on 3 December 1926.

John and Catherine are buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

John and Catherine (Miller) Barber were the parents of ten children (six dead before 1900):
