CLINTON, Dec. 19.—Hiram J. Allen, one
of the best known business men of this
village, died at his home on Marvin street
about midnight last night. He was a
son of Henry and Orma Lockwood Allen
and was born in Canton, St. Lawrence
county, on November 16, 1831. At the age
of 16 he went to Buffalo and spent four
years as an apprentice in the carpenter
and builder trade.
The next seven years lie spent in the
quartermaster's department of the United
States Army in Texas and California. He
then resumed his trade in Chicago and
St- Louis. Later he returned to bis home
county and spent fifteen years In building
and contracting.
Mr. Allen came to Clinton twenty-seven
years ago and for several years was actively engaged in building, having constructed
several buildings on College Hill
and about the village. He then went into
the hardware business and at his death
occupied his own block of four stores at
the head of College street. He had a|
personal acquaintance with Abraham Lin-
coin. Mr. Allen resided next door to Mr.
Lincoln at Springfield, III., and belonged
to the Masonic club as did Mr. Lincoln. He
was married fifty years ago last July.
His widow and the following children
survive: Walter H. Allen of Worcester,
Mass.: Mrs. Jay T. Badgley of Dunkirk.
Alice I. and Edith V. Allen. H. K. Allen.
Harold W. Allen and Leslie H. Alien of
this village. The: funeral will be held

ALLEN, HIRAM J., was born in Potsdam, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., November 11, 1831, son of Henry Allen who was a native of Vermont. H. J. Allen was for a number of years in the employment of the government, and has gained a great knowledge of traveling, and when quite young, was in California, Mexico and many other places of interest. He learned the trade of a carpenter and joiner, which business he followed many years. He was the builder of two of the Hamilton College buildings, also two of the society buildings, and at present conducts the leading plumbing business and hardware store in the village. He is a director in the Mercantile Cooperative Co. of Rome, N. Y., and married Adelaide Clough, of Vermont, by whom he has seven children: Walter H., Nellie M., Alice D., Edith V., Herbert, Harold and Leslie H.
