27th Michigan Infantry Co. A (Sergeant)
Enlisted 15 Aug. 1862 age 18, Ontonagon, MI.
Wounded 15 Jun 1864
Discharged 23 May 1865

Henry Augustus Place died at Ontonagon on the 18th, aged 32. He enlisted there in 1863, in Company A, Twenty-seventh Michigan Infantry, and followed that regiment through its hardships. He took part in the battles of Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, a shell taking his knapsack from his shoulder at the latter engagement. Shortly after he was wounded in the knee and taken to the hospital, where he remained until his time expired, when he returned home, but with a constitution badly shattered and withal a cripple. Soon after he settled at Mt. Clemens, where he lived till 1877, when he returned to Ontonagon in the hope that its more bracing air might give him a new lease of life -- but it was in vain. He leaves a wife.
