U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College Virginia, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced to practice law in Greenville, Georgia. Moving to Chambers County, Alabama, in 1846, he continued to practice law and engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third, Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1859. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel of the 37th Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Infantry, Confederate Army. After the war, he was president of the East Alabama College, (1868-70).
