Robert E Alford Obit

Born: 21 October 1855
Died: 12 October 1929
Well known banker, Robert Alford died of heart disease Saturday morning. He was born in Scottville township to M.T and Rebecca E (Ballard) Alford, both natives of Tennessee. They moved to North Macoupin County in 1850. Robert, one of 17 children, was a loyal family man; he work with his family until age 27 helping to support his siblings. He met and married Mary Edward Ballard 26 March 1884. They had one daughter, Alma B Alford.
He worked in grain and livestock farming for 50 years, retiring at 65 to begin managing farms and became the president of the State Bank of Girard. He maintained this position until his death. He was a member of the local Methodist Church and alleviated himself with the Democratic party. He was very civil mined and served as a president of the Girard chamber of Commerce and was a supervisor of Macoupin County for 20 years. After serving as a member of the local Board of Review for many years with the road and bridge committee, he was chosen to serve as County superintendent of highways. He helped secure the land for the Girard Township High school.
He is survived by his wife and daughter, a granddaughter, Maurine England, and two of his brothers, Caleb C and C H Alford, all of Girard. Also living are three sisters, Mrs. Sara Vogel of Palmyra, Mrs. Martha Angel of Carlinville and Mrs. Rose Whithorn of Clay New York.
The funeral was held at 3:00 on Monday October 14th at his home adjoining the high school as services were conducted by Rev D L Jeffers and assisted by S. W Barnes, who read his obituary as well as delivered an eulogy on the exemplary life of Mr. Alford . Internment was in the Girard Cemetery.
In appreciation of his years of community service, businesses in Girard were closed in his honor. The members of the local Chamber of Commerce And many business leaders came to pay their respects. It appeared that most of Girard as well as North Otter, his former home, were in attendance, besides numerous friends from far away.
