Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born in New York City, he was a farmer when the US entered World War I and served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy. After the war he returned to farming and was publisher of the American Agriculturalist. He began his career in the public service when his friend Franklin D. Roosevelt then Governor of New York, appointed him chairman of the Agricultural Advisory Commission in 1929. When Roosevelt became President, Morgenthau became chairman of the Federal Farm Board and was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1934. While in office, he devised a system for funding World War II by selling small war bonds to private citizens which raised $49 billion. In 1944, he served as chairman of the Bretton Woods conference, the landmark financial summit at which the International Monetary Fund and World Bank were established. After President Franklin D. Roosevelt's death he served on President Harry S Truman President Harry S Truman's staff until he resigned on July 22, 1945. He devoted the remainder of his life to Jewish philanthropic causes and was an ardent supporter of the state of Israel. He died at age 75 in Poughkeepsie, New York.
