James L. Brock was born to David L. Brock (1825-1909) and Margaret J. Owen Crumpler (1874-1911). He was the 6th of 9 children. Dennis Holmes Brock (1861- unknown),William Lee Brock (1863-1864), John O. Brock (1865-1889),Walter P. Brock (1867-unknown),Thomas Hubbard Brock (1870-unknown), JAMES L. BROCK (1872-1948),Alexander Brock (1875-1875), Emma Winniford Brock (1879-1902),and Edgar Brock (1882-unknown).Jim was born and raised in Sampson County and came to Durham when population was only 5000 folks. Jim worked for Christain-Howard Furniture Co. 30 years till his retirement. Jims family can be traced back to William Cromartie (1731-unknown)in Scotland, who settled in Bladen County about 1759. Jims grandfather was Rev. Miles Parker Owen, and his grandmother was Catherine Winneford Cromartie parents of Margret J. Owen Crumpler a descendant of Stephen Hopkins Who sailed to America on the Mayflower in 1620. In 1894 Jim married Ella Nora Howell (1874-1960) daughter of Henry Howell and Marcina Rose (dates unknown)they had four children, Ethel L. Brock (1897-1970), Mamie Brock (1905-1996), Edward L.Brock (1909-1971), Katherin Brock (1910-2003). Jims desire in life was to be an engineer but being small of stature he chose the furniture business.
