Obituary:
FORMER JUDGE DIES AT AGE 90
Published: Wednesday, 21 Mar 1951, Charleston Gazette p. 8

Judge George Poffenbarger, 90, prominent state jurist and attorney, died yesterday at his home at 1009 Walnut Rd. after a long illness.

A judge of the State Supreme Court of Appeals from 1900 to 1922, he was born in Mason County on Nov. 24, 1861, on a farm owned by Gen. John McCausland, not far from Pt. Pleasant. Educated in Mason County schools and at Pt. Pleasant Academy, he attended Rio Grande (Ohio) College. He taught school from 1880 to 1886, and worked for a year as a bookkeeper in New Mexico. His entry into public life came with his election as Mason County sheriff in 1888, a position he held for four years.

After retiring as judge in 1922, he became a member of the law firm of Poffenbarger, Blue and Dayton. He later formed, with his sons, the firm of Poffenbarger and Poffenbarger. His active service was concluded Jan. 1, when he retired from the recently organized firm of Hodges and Poffenbarger. He remained, however, as legal consultant. Active in the development of the Pt. Pleasant area, he had served as director of the Marietta Manufacturing Co. and the Point Pleasant Development Co.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church; Kanawha Lodge No. 20, AF & AM; a 32nd degree Mason; a member of Robert Morris Conslatory; and Sons of the American Revolution.

He is survived by two sons, Perry S. and Nathan B. Poffenbarger, local lawyers; a brother, Lewis Poffenbarger of Beech Hill; a sister , Miss Mary Poffenbarger, also of Beech Hill; and one grandson.

The body is at Simpson mortuary pending the completion of funeral arrangements.
