US Congressman. He studied law in Tennessee, was admitted to the bar in 1874, moved to Colorado and setup a law practice in Saguache. He was Saguache County Attorney, (1874-76), Hinsdale County Clerk in 1878, Mayor of Lake City, in 1885 and judge of the seventh judicial district of Colorado, (1889-92). In 1893, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1903. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, was judge of the Court of Appeals of Colorado, (1913-15) and a member of the Colorado State Board of Agriculture, from 1931 until his death at age 81.
