Mlle. Dian Barbezat was a lifelong, decorated nurse and French language teacher who, though available details are disappointingly vague, led a long, remarkable life.

Born in Rochefort, in western Switzerland, she spent part of her youth living in London with an aunt who is said to have been a maid of honor to Queen Victoria.

After studying medicine, Dian was nurse to an elderly Jules Verne before serving the French Army with the medical corps during World War I. For her actions during the war, she earned the Croix de Guerre (depicted on her grave) and two other unspecified decorations.

After serving with the U.S. occupation forces, she immigrated to the United States in 1921 and worked in a hospital in Boston. Here, valued for the eloquence of her French, she was hired by the famed Italian actress, Eleanor Duse, as a personal nurse and companion during an extended U.S. tour.

Mlle. Barbezat was also friends with Edith de Lacy, whom she had worked with in France during the war. Edith, a British nurse, had adopted a war orphan she had cared for in Nancy. Bringing him to the United States after the war, the boy, now known as Philippe de Lacy, became a famous child actor in Hollywood. In 1930, Edith enlisted Dian, by this time living in Santa Barbara, to teach the boy French. Through her connection with Philippe and Edith, Dian became associated with Hollywood and popular in film circles.

In the late 30s and early 40s, she lived in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, where she was often the featured speaker or honored invitee of social clubs and high society gatherings.

She returned to California after several years and resided in San Bernardino and Los Angeles County for the remainder of her life.
