She was born February 14, 1928 to Howard and Joanna (Skillin) Sohnrey in Durham. Freda graduated from Durham High School in 1945 and also graduated from Golden Empire College of Commerce. In the late 40's she married Morris Colbert, they divorced a few years later and in 1951 she married John Panuke, whom she had met while working at the Diamond Match Lumber Co.
Freda was a very active member of the Durham American Legion Auxiliary and served on the selection committee for the boys and girls state. She was also a member of the Durham Woman's Club and had been elected Durham Woman of the Year. She enjoyed yard work, raising flowers and cooking.
Her survivors include her three sons, Gary (Nancy) Colbert of Forbestown, Howard (Louann) Panuke of Lakeview, Ore, Ed (Patty) Panuke of Durham; two brothers Ivan (Caralee) Sohnrey of Durham, Roger (Sylvia) Sohnrey of Durham; one sister Alice (Don) Hill of Magalia; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Freda was preceded in death by her husband John Panuke and two sisters, Ida Olson and Vera Baker.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Donations may be made in her memory to the American Legion in care of the Brusie Funeral Home. Published in Chico Enterprise-Record on January 21, 2009.
