Thomas Jefferson Atteberry was the son of Thomas Atteberry (Sr.)and Francis Elizabeth, born in 1862 in Arkansas. His first wife, Sarah, died very young, I was told in childbirth. He then married Melissa Evelyn Johnston, when he was 23 and she was 19. The family had 16 children, but lost two who died young. The family moved around a lot: they lived in Alabama from about 1885 to 1906, they were in Arkansaw in 1907 where one of their sons, Gean, was born and back in Alabama in 1911 when their youngest, the twins, were born. I believe they moved to Missouri sometime between 1912-1917, where their oldest son, Lee and his family were then living. Thomas's first grandson, Olin died there 1918. Thomas was widowed in 1923 - Evelyn was buried in Duklin, Missouri. Since there was no Social Security until long after the Great Depression ended, people used to take turns staying with various of their grown children. He married a third time to a Mary Bentley (her name is given as Bendley on his death certificate, which lists him as widowed, however they had separated, so she might have still been living. I was told she did not stay with him long). Thomas was living with with Alice and her family in Kennet, Missouri when he took ill and died on Nov. 7, 1939 at the age of 77. So far I have been able to find 66 children in the next generation, 52 of which lived.Thomas lived to see 58 of his grandchildren.
