Joseph Anderson Enlisted as a Private in the United States Colored Troops on 31 May 1864. On 5 July 1864 he mustered in at Louisville, KY with Company G, 109th U.S.C.I.

SERVICE.
-Duty at Louisville and Louisa, KY, till October, 1864.
-Ordered to join Army of the Potomac before Petersburg and Richmond, VA.
-Duty at Deep Bottom and in trenches before Richmond north of the James River till March, 1865.
-Actions at Fort Harrison December 10, 1864, and January 23, 1865.
-Moved to Hatcher's Run March 27-28.
-Appomattox Campaign March 28-April 9.
-Boydton Road, Hatcher's Run, March 29-31.
-Fall of Petersburg April 2.
-Pursuit of Lee April 3-9.
-Appomattox Court House April 9.
-Surrender of Lee and his army.
Duty at Petersburg and City Point till May.
Embarked for Texas May 25, arriving at Indianola, Texas, June 25.
Duty there and on the Rio Grande, Texas, till March, 1866. Mustered out as a Musician on March 21, 1866.

After the war Joseph and his wife Mary (born in NC 1844) moved to Ohio where in 1865 their son John H. Anderson was born. Their other children; Lewis (1867) and Charles (1869) may have been born in Fayette County, OH. By 1870 they settled in Xenia where Ida (1872), Fannie (1876) and Martha (1878) were probably born. Joseph was still living in Xenia in 1890.

This soldier's headstone is lost, probably from a tornado in 1972 that destroyed much of the cemetery.
