McKaney Held For Running Down Child

Coroner's Verdict Implicates Colored Driver For Charlton Lad's Death.

A warrant charging Ray McKaney, colored, with involuntary manslaughter, was sworn out yesterday following the investigation by Mayor Sheffy L. Devier, as acting coroner, into the automobile accident which cost the life of seven-year old Lynwood Charlton Wednesday morning.

Chief Frank L. Dovel testified at the inquest that, from all evidence he had obtained, McKaney was driving his machine at an excessive rate of speed and was on the wrong side of the street when he ran down the child. The police chief added that McKaney did not stop his car until traveling 66 yards after striking the child.

McKaney maintained that he was driving only around 20 or 25 miles per hour.

Following the coroner's verdict charging McKaney with responsibility for the accident, the colored youth will be given a preliminary hearing within a few days. It, is presumed that he will be sent onto the circuit court grand jury.

The Charlton child died nearly 12 hours after the accident. He suffered a double fracture at the base of the skull and little , hope was entertained for his recovery when rushed to the hospital. The lad the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Charlton, East Washington Street, will be buried at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Linville Creek Cemetery.
