Hilma emigrated to the United States in about 1895. There are ship records available at Ancestry.com to document her journey. Hilma settled in Bayfield Twp., Bayfield, Wisconsin where she married Gustaf Carlson, another Swedish immigrant, in early 1897. They were the parents of Michael, Iner, Edith, Reuben, Alberta, and Edith G. (not an error; the last girl child was born after her father's death and named for her sister who had died a year earlier.) Gustaf was a professional fisherman. He drowned in Lake Superior in 1907. The 1910 census showed Hilma working as a housekeeper and she tried to care for and keep her family intact. Though young, Michael and Iner left the family shortly thereafter to support themselves and seek their fortunes. They ended up in Ohio. Other family members, including Hilma, later followed them, settling in Cuyahoga County, near Cleveland.
Hilma is buried in beautiful Lakeview Cemetery, as is her son, Iner, his wife, and their infant son, James. Each spring, an entire hillside at Lakeview blooms with yellow daffodils. It is a breathtaking sight that brings comfort to her family.
