Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. US Diplomat. Elected to represent New York's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1873 to 1874. Also served as Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1867 to 1868, Candidate for Governor of New York in 1870, United States District Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1877 to 1883, Alternate Delegate to the Republican National Convention from New York in 1880, and United States Minister to Spain from 1897 to 1898.
