Glenn A. Anderson, 96, died Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Homestead Assisted Living Center in Rexburg, Idaho.
He was born Feb. 28, 1915, to Arvid and Laura Green Anderson at the home that his father built in Ashton, Idaho. He was the youngest of six children. Glenn's father died when Glenn was 16 years old, and his mother died when he was 21 years old. Glenn had many issues with his heart, and in 2003, half of his heart died and he wasn't expected to live. He managed to live another eight years.
After his parents died, he farmed with his brother, Lloyd. After Lloyd died, Glenn had to sell the farm to pay for his parents' hospital bills. He was left with $60 after the sale. He joined the United States Army for World War II when he was 30 years old. In the service, he was given an IQ test and he scored second highest in the battalion, and because of that, he was sent to do instruction in field artillery at Fort Sill and then in Memphis, Tenn. While in the service, he worked with field artillery because he was very mechanically inclined. He enjoyed his work with the 280 Howitzer cannon. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant after two years of service.
He married Ruth Reed Guipre in January 1950. They moved to Ashton after they were married.
After the war, he farmed for a man south of Pocatello. He then worked for an implement company in Bancroft. He found various types of work which included driving truck. He helped build North Fremont High School in 1950. He poured the first wheelbarrow of cement and hung the last door for the school. The construction superintendent of the school offered him a full-time job. He declined the job because of the many moves it would involve, and they chose to stay in Ashton. He really enjoyed carpentering more than any other kind of work. He started farming after the work on the school was finished. He worked as the water master for the Marysville Canal Co. while farming. He did this for 32 years. While farming and working for the canal company, he also did carpenter work and framed pictures for people.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; his wife, Ruth; son, Bruce Anderson; and stepdaughter, Sharon (Don) Hill.
He was survived by his son, Neil (Randee) Anderson of Redmond, Wash.; stepson, John (Sandy) Guipre of Helena, Mont.; stepdaughter, Janice Fransen of Rexburg; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at Ashton Community United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Pineview Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post No. 89.
