Rhoda Amanda Russell was the daughter of Rev. William R. Russell and Nancy Reavis of North Carolina. Her parents had moved from North Carolina to Boone County, Missouri in the early 1800s and she was born there. They relocated to Camden County, Missouri by 1841.
In 1841 Rhoda Amanda Russell became the second wife of widower, Bennett Jackson Clinton, who had three daughters from his marriage to Harriet Cummins, who died in 1839. Amanda and Bennett had eleven children together: Nancy C. Clinton (1842 – 1845), David Harrison Clinton (1843 – 1927), William Arthur Clinton (1845 – 1889), Martha Ursula Clinton (1847 – 1920), George Patrick Leonard Clinton (1849 – 1928), James M. Clinton (1853 – 1856), Mary Jackson Clinton (1855 – 1856), Bennett Jackson Clinton II (1857 – ), Amanda Beatrice Clinton (1859 – 1926), Jeannette Maude Clinton (1862 – ), and Elizabeth J. Clinton.
By 1860 the Clinton family had moved to Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri. Bennett died in 1879 and was buried in Mound Cemetery; an identical tombstone was also set for Rhoda Amanda Clinton, bearing only her birth date. However, sometime after 1880 Amanda moved to California to live with her daughter and died there in 1892. She was buried in Rosedale Cemetery in California and shares a tombstone with her daughter, Martha Ursula Clinton Reed, Martha's husband Phelps Reed and their four children.
There is another memorial for Amanda on FindAGrave.com, #49724351, in Mound Cemetery, but that tombstone beside her husband, Bennett Jackson Clinton, was never used.
