Jonathan Miller, son of Elizabeth (Fouse) Miller and Abraham Miller, was born on the old Miller homestead near Canton, Ohio, September 15, 1818; and on September 19, 1839, married Lydia Cassler, daughter of Lewis and Nancy (Wise) Cassler. Mr. Miller lived on the old homestead for several years after his marriage where his first child was born December 14, 1840. About 1841 or 1842, they moved to a farm which Mr. Miller owned and, about 1847, bought a water power sawmill adjoining his farm; about a year later he erected a more modern mill at this place. About 1850, he sold his farm, but retained the mill, and bought a farm which had belonged to his father-in-law, Lewis Cassler. Mr. Miller undertook various other enterprises, and lost all that he had gained up to that time. He was a born mechanic, and after his losses worked at various occupations with but indifferent success. In 1865, he bought 160 acres of unimproved land in Clinton County, Iowa, and in 1866, with his family, took up his residence there. In the spring of 1869, he sold this land and with his family again set out, this time for Missouri. After traveling by wagon for over 300 miles they arrived at Maryville, in the
northwestern part of that state some time in the following June. He rented a farm for two seasons, and in 1871 moved to Easton, Buchanan County, where he opened a blacksmith and repair shop, which business he followed to the time of his death, October 21, 1875. Mrs. Miller lived with her children until her death June 20, 1907. Jonathan and Lydia had eight children: Adam Lewis, Nancy, John Cassler, infant son, Elizabeth, Mary, Fyanna and Lydia.
