Fraser, One-Time Golfing Phenom, Expires at 33
Atlantic City, NJ (AP). Assemblyman James E. (Sonny) Fraser died yesterday at his home.
Fraser, nationally known amateur golfer, suffered from Hodgkins disease for the past 10 years. He was 33.
Golf made James Emerson (Sonny) Fraser one of South Jersey's outstanding individuals. The game introduced him to President Warren G. Harding, to utilities magnate Clarence Geist, to comedian Bob Hope, to statesman Paul V. McNutt and to hundreds of other prominent persons.
Sonny Fraser was a boy wonder on the links. He played his first 18 holes at five years of age using clubs cut down by his father. When he was 12, Fraser broke 70, scoring a 69 on the par 71 Seaview course. The next year he entered tournament play and tied the Seaview course record of 67 held jointly by his father and golf's great Walter Hagen.
As the years went by he whittled away at the course record until Aug 6, 1943 when he scored a 60 for the 18 holes.
