He was a pioneer in cultivating blueberries, working with Dr. Coville and Elizabeth White. The strand Grover, named for Russell Grover and Chatsworth named for the town of Chatsworth were other important breeding parents. The cross of 'Rubel' by Grover in 1916 gave 'Jersey', released as a cultivar and still a major cultivar grown today.
