Hebron Journal Register, July 1979. Hulda Maria Vortman was born June 30, 1898, at Carleton NE. She was the daughter of Mr. Carl Elting and Mrs. Christine Elting, nee Schardt. She was baptized July 10, 1898, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedensau by the Rev. Albert Groerich. Her confirmation took place also at Trinity on Mar. 31, 1912, with the Rev. H. Schabacker as pastor. On Apr. 11, 1920, she was married to Adolph Vortman. This union was blessed with two children, Gerald and Ruth. Mr. and Mrs. Vortman lived in the Carleton area until 1951, when they moved to Deshler. In January of 1979, they entered Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron. Here Mr. Vortman passed into eternal life on May 12, 1979, and Mrs. Vortman on July 8, 1979. She reached the age of 81 years and eight days. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Adolph; two brothers, Herman and Henry; six sisters, Christine in infancy, Emma Werner, Caroline Aufderheide, Sophia Jagels, Anna Neuhart Gerberding, and Frieda Jagels; and two grandchildren, Karen and Paul Vortman. She was the last surviving member of the Carl Elting family. She is survived by her son, Gerald and wife, Hilda, of Carleton; daughter, Ruth and husband Jay Klopfenstein of Chicago; three grandchildren, Linda and husband, Dan Cervany of Springfield IL, Bruce Klopfenstein of Williams Bay WI, and Jonathan Vortman of Carleton; and one great-granddaughter, Melissa Cervany. The funeral service was conducted at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler on Wed. July 11, 1979 at 10 a.m. The Rev. James Moll officiated and delivered the message entitled, "Resting With God" based on Hebrews 4:9-10. St. Peter Male Choir sang "Abide With Me" under the direction of Mr. Charles Lieder. Mrs. Charles Lieder led the congregation on the organ in the singing of "I'm But a Stranger here" and "Jerusalem, Thou City Fair and High." Interment took place at Deshler City Cemetery. Casket bearers were Dwayne Elting, Leonard Elting, Glenn Elting, Verland Schardt, Reuben Neuhart, and Jonathan Vortman. Ahrendts Funeral Home Associates were in charge of arrangements.
