He was born January 28, 1932, in Mount Harris, Colorado (a small coal mining camp), son of Margaret May Lonsdale and August Caumiant. He married Norma Jean Thornton in Colorado in March 1953. Jim moved his family to Nevada in 1964. He moved around the state of Nevada doing road construction for many years and settled in the Reno area permanently in 1979.

Jim was an Honorary member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 3 for 37 years. He was a very active union member. He retired January 1993 and continued to be very active. He served as executive board member, Grievance board member, election committee member, and most recently served as a lobbyist for Local 3 at the State Legislature.
