Born in Luray, VA, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Bessie (Tharpe) Nunn.
Dorothy was a 1943 graduate of the York Hospital School of Nursing.
After she graduated, Dorothy worked in York and Washington, D.C. Dorothy also worked many years as a private duty nurse, especially to her large family of nine children as their health failed.
Dorothy and her husband, Bob, traveled extensively throughout the United States and Alaska. Following their travels, they enjoyed many years down at Long Beach Island in New Jersey with their family and their beloved grandchildren Lauren and Daniel.
Mrs. Shearer was a member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, York Hospital Nurses Association, and she volunteered for years with her church and the many programs that her children, Judy and Bob, were involved with in school. Dorothy was also an avid reader.
In addition to her loving husband, Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Judith Shearer Eyster and husband, Michael C. Eyster of Lancaster; a son, Robert K. Shearer and wife, Debra S. Shearer of Reidsville, NC; a granddaughter, Lauren M. Eyster of Washington, DC; and a grandson, Daniel A. Eyster and wife, Jacqueline L. Eyster of Manheim.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.., July 29, 2011, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, York. Her pastor, The Rev. Elizabeth C. Polanzke, will officiate. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
