Greg Poe entered into this world on November 25, 1953. He left us on July 24, 2011 of natural causes. He was 57.

Greg was born in Boise, Idaho to Kenny and Katherine (Smith) Poe. He spent his childhood on what came to be known as "Poe's Hill". It was a special place and a special time. He attended Collister Elementary School, Hillside Jr. High School and graduated from Capital High School in 1972. He went on to attend, and graduate from, Boise State University with a bachelor's degree in business. While attending college, Greg placed 2nd in a national speech competition, and spoke at his college commencement ceremony.

While in Jr. High, he established one of his first goals in life which was to win the city high jump competition. With hard work and determination, he achieved that goal. This event established his approach to success throughout the rest of his life.

Greg developed a passion for space and aviation at a very early age. He closely followed the Gemini and Apollo Space programs, which inspired his desire to aim for the sky. When Greg was 16 he experienced his first airplane ride with a dear family friend, Walt "Moose" Mousseau. It was at this moment that he knew he wanted to do this for the rest of his life. Greg worked to save his money to acquire his private pilot's license, which he did at the age of 19.

Greg received his first aerobatic instruction from John Chambers at the old Strawberry Glen Airport in Boise. This was the beginning of what would become a life-long friendship. It was John who introduced Greg to aerobatic flying, which quickly became his passion and ultimately his career. In the early days, Greg's flying consisted of aerobatic and back-country flying in Idaho. His skill and experience quickly evolved, leading him to enter competitions around the country, which enhanced his skills and understanding of high performance aircraft and eventually led to his first airshow performance in 1992. Shortly after, he became a full time airshow pilot and a main stay on the circuit, performing at 15 to 25 airshow events each year.

Greg considered one of the highlights of his career to be the time he spent as the production test pilot for Aviat Aircraft in Afton, Wyoming. During that time he was responsible for test flying all the Pitts and Husky aircraft that rolled out the factory doors.

Greg was chosen for several nationally televised airshow freestyle competitions, placing 2nd in the World Free Style Sport Flying Championships in 1999, and 3rd in the World Aerobatic Federation contest in 2000. Greg's incredible skill has been showcased in such television programs as Modern Marvels, Ripley's Believe it or Not, CBS news, FOX sports, ESPN, The Discovery Channel and others. He was most recently featured as the incredible "G-Force" on Stan Lee's Superhumans, a popular series which aired in 2010 on The History Channel.

In 2006, Greg reached a new peak with his flying when he began working with Fagen, Inc., a heavy contractor specializing in Green Energy facility construction. With his Fagen MX2 and MXS aircraft, Greg traveled the airshow circuit promoting Fagen's Ethanol and other Green Energy initiatives with his incredible airshow feats. He had the distinction of pioneering the first unlimited aerobatic aircraft to utilize Ethanol. He began creating his team, first hiring veteran Dax Wanless as his Crew Chief and announcer, and then expanded his staff to include media coordination and road support. At the time of his death, Greg Poe Airshows, Inc. had become one of the most sought after airshow acts in the industry.

Greg Poe's adventurous nature took him to over 25 countries. Along the way he lived in Saudi Arabia for a year, working with contractor Morrison Knudsen.

When he wasn't working, Greg enjoyed spending time with his children, Ryan and Kelsey. He coached Ryan's baseball team, and loved to take them flying, camping and back-packing in Idaho. He enjoyed entertaining friends and family.

His life took a major turn in 2002 following the drug related death of his son, Ryan. While at airshows across the country, he began visiting schools and youth groups with his Elevate Your Life program, discussing the incredible opportunities aviation has afforded him and telling his son's story as a reminder to young people about the importance of making the right choices and following their dreams.

He developed a love for El Salvador, and visited there often. His team and the Ryan J. Poe Foundation supported the small town of Ataco with school supplies and housing donations for disadvantaged families.

Greg Poe said he wants to be remembered as a "pilot, an entertainer and someone who gave back to the community". His family will remember him as a generous and loving father, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

The family and GPA Team wishes to thank the many friends and fans who have offered support during this time.

Greg is survived by his daughter, Kelsey; best friend and brother, Russ (Theresa) Poe and nieces Samantha and Alyx Poe; friend and companion, Terri Dockweiler; brother, Rick (Susan) Poe; cousin, Sheila Poe; cousins, Mike (Tracy) Poe; Debbie (Larry) Whitehead; uncle Ross (Clara) Smith, Fresno, CA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenny and Katherine Poe; his son, Ryan Poe; grandmother, Marie Smith, and cousin, Kenny "Beaver" Poe.
