James Nichols was born in Bourbon Co., Ky, Sept 11, 1799. died at Ursa; was married to Miss Margaret Wallace, a native of the same county as himself. She died on June 20 1834 leaving four children, two of them still living. On Dec 22 of the same year he was married to his second wife, who was Miss Mourning Bowles, a native of Bourbon Co Ky, who died May 29, 1849, leaving six children, all of whom are living but one. He was married Sept 28 to his third wife, who died June 12 1886, leaving one son, who died March 18, 1889. He emigrated from Kentucky to Illinois in 1832, settling in Adams Co, about four miles north of Quincy. In 1836 or 1837 he moved to a farm which is now 1 1/2 miles morth of Ursa, where he has since retired. He was one among the first settlers of the county. Has been a member of the christian church for nearly half a century. At the time of his death there are living seven children, forty-two grandchildren, and thirty-two great-grandchildren. In October last, his brother died, aged 98, they being two of the oldest (if not the oldest) settlers of Adams Co.


His brother mentioned above in the Obit, was John Perkins Nichols. John is written up in an Adams Co History (date unknown) with some interesting info--
John Nichols was born in Fayette Co Ky Nov 8 1797. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth (Perkins) Nichols, the former a native of Virginia, the latter of Maryland. His father died when he was five years of age; his mother married again and removed to Bourbon Co. He moved to Illinois and landed in Adams co in 1831.
John Perkins Nichols OBIT states he came to Illinois in 1832 and lived for two or three years in the vicinity of Ursa, after which, in 1835 he moved to farm just south of Columbus.
