Along with Theophilus Harrison, Hugh W Harrison and Cyrus Thompson, William Buchanan founded the Harrison Machine Works, a manufacturer of threshing machines and other farm implements. At the time the company built their "Jumbo" tractor (pictured in this entry), P T Barnum was travelling the country with what he billed as the largest elephant in the world. The Harrison Machine Works contacted the great impresario to inquire whether they could call their tractor "Jumbo", Barnum graciously replied that he had no copyright on the word "jumbo" and to please call their new farm implement the "Jumbo Tractor."

William C Buchanan was the president of the Green Mount Cemetery Association, organized in 1873. Part of the charter for the cemetery reads: "The managers of this enterprise have succeeded in making this cemetery attractive and beautiful. The cemetery is situated two miles east of Belleville and is accessible from the Mascoutah plank road by the Freeburg plank road, and also by the Louisville and Nashville railroad. The grounds comprise 160 acres. The officers are: President -- William C Buchanan; Secretary and Treasurer -- Frederick H Pieper; Superintendent -- Theophilus Harrison."

William C Buchanan grew to be a wealthy and prominent member of the business community in Belleville, IL.
