Death of Horace White.

Our townsman HORACE WHITE, Esq., departed this life at his residence at 11 o'clock this forenoon. Mr. White's health has been seriously impaired for several years; for some weeks he has been gradually failing, and his death has been expected at any hour since Sunday last.

Mr. White was born at Homer, Cortland county, in 1803, and was yesterday 57 years and six months old. His father, ASA WHITE, was one of the early settlers of Cortland county, having located at Homer in 1798. HORACE WHITE, his eldest son, went from home at the age of twelve years, and spent his youth as a clerk in stores at Auburn, Albany and Homer. In 1838, he removed to Syracuse, and soon afterwards, in connection with others, established the Bank of Syracuse, of which he was the Cashier until 1854, when he was compelled to resign the active duties of that position on account of ill-health, but as Vice-President retained his connection with the institution until his death.

Mr. White was an active and successful business man, and from a humble beginning amassed a large fortune. He was probably the wealthiest man in Onondaga county, and his estate is estimated at very nearly a million dollars. From the commencement of the railroads now forming the Central road, he took much interest and was largely engaged primarily in them. On the consolidation of these roads, he was selected as one of the Directors, and has continued to hold that position ever since. He was also considerably interested in some of the Western railroads, and was a Director of several of them.

The deceased was the elder and only brother of HAMILTON WHITE, Esq., of this city. His wife and two sons survive him. The oldest son, ANDREW D. WHITE, is the Professor of History in the University of Michigan, and the other, HORACE K. WHITE, was engaged in business pursuits with his father. Mr. White, several years since, made a liberal donation to Hobart College, and his gifts to church and charitable purposes were large.
