U.S. Congressman. He studied law in Keokuk, Iowa, was admitted to the bar in 1858, moved to Tennessee, in 1860, to California in 1862, Nevada in 1866 and finally to Montana. There he was a member of the Montana Territorial House of Representatives, (1871-72), was a delegate to the constitutional conventions of Montana in 1884 and practiced law in Butte. In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law and traveled until his death at age 72.
