A pharmacist from Sacramento, in 1920 Sayre purchased the Colfax Drug Store in Colfax, Placer County, California from the heirs of the former owner, John Butler. He then did extensive remodeling and added a new Victrola department featuring the latest phonograph supplies. In 1929, he sold the store to Sam Laing of Sacramento and moved to Woodland, California.

While in Colfax, Sayre served two terms as Post Commander of American Legion Post 192: 1925 and 1926. He was a major force behind the formation of the Colfax Lions on May 9, 1928 and was also a member of the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department.
