Civil War Union Army Officer. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 125th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was cited for gallantry at Chapultepec Castle and for distinguished service throughout the Mexican War, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th United States Regular Infantry on the personal recommendation of Major General Winfield Scott, in 1848. Established in his chosen trade, he did well for himself, gaining the rank of Captain by the outbreak of the Civil War. He was killed on the 2nd day in the Battle of Gettysburg, in the line of duty while commanding a brigade in the Third Division of the Army of the Potomac’s Second Corps. His brigade had a significant impact on the fighting of July 2nd. The timely arrival of the brigade and its counterattack, checked and then threw back Confederate General William Barksdale's Mississippians, who had presented a threat to the left-center of the Union battle line.
