Saginaw News: Tuesday July 22, 1941

Another name was added Tuesday to the mounting roster of Saginaw county's lives sacrificed to traffic, recording as the year's 36th traffice victim. William Stockwell, 75, of St. Charles. He died Monday night at Saginaw General hospital of hurts suffered when he walked into the side of a moving car. The accident occurred Monday noon on M-17, near the St. Charles cemetery. The car's driver was James L. Fookes, 55, of Breckenridge Rd.

coroner Richard F. Gugel ordered an autopsy to determine positively the cause of death, but asserted the belief the examination would show Stockwell suffered a skull fracture. Sheriff's deputies indicated Tuesday the Fookes would not be held responsible for the accident, because Stockwell walked directly into the side of the moving automobile. Fookes gave prosecutor Friske a sworn statement Monday afternoon of his version of the accient.

The funeral of Willames James Stockwell, sexton of St. Charles cemetery for the past 27 years, who died Monday night of injuries suffered in an automobile accident, took place Thursday at the home. Elder, John D. Wade of Saginaw officiated and burial was in Riverside. He was born March 17, 1867, in Bay City, and came with his family to St. Charles over 60 years ago. He married Miss Ottie Bixby of St. Charles July 2, 1887. He leaves his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Loraina Borden of Kalkaska and Miss Gracie Stockwell at home; one son, William of Midland; one brother, Henry, of Saginaw; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildern.
