Mrs. Pete VanCleave
Mrs. Pete VanCleave of Reamsville, a resident of Smith County for the past 60 years, died Sunday, July 24. She leaves besides her bereaved husband and children, a large number of neighbors and friends who are saddened by her death. A few weeks ago she became ill and was taken by her husband to a hospital in Boulder, Colo. for treatment. The doctors there gave him no encouragement whatever as to her condition and advised hi to bring her home at once. She bore her last days of severe suffering with great fortitude and patience and was surrounded by most of her family who tendered all the loving care that humans can do.
" The funeral was held from the Funeral Home in this city this forenoon at 10:00 o'clock, the services being conducted by the Rev. Ira N. Faurot of the First Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.
"Carrie M., third child of the Charlie and Sophia (Glintmeyer) Gardner household, was born Feb. 28, 1877, at Schenectady, N. Y. and departed this life at Franklin, Nebr., on July 24, 1938, at the age of 61 years, 4 months and 26 days.
"The Gardners came to Smith County with their little family when the baby, Carrie, was one year old. They located in Washington township, which place continued to be the home of deceased until in 1922. She and her husband and children moved to Reamsville and entered the mercantile business.
""Carrie Gardner was united in marriage with P. J. VanCleave on Feb. 27, 1898. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, to ever revere the memory of a devoted mother. They were Ben, Mrs. Nora Morgan, Mrs. Mary McNealy and Mrs. Creda Wright all of Emmett, ID, James and Mrs. Mayme Cooper of the home address and Will and Harold of Nubieber, Calif. Mrs. VanCleave was also proud to claim 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
"Besides her husband and children, the deceased is survived by five brothers and three sisters. She being the first of father's family to go. Their names and addresses are Ed Gardner and Mrs. Rosa Buck, Smith Center; Chris and Will, Eckley, Colo.; Oliver, Emmett, ID; Mrs. Emma Pounds, Boulder, Colo.; Elmer, Ensign, Kansas; Mrs. Alta Tracy, Los Angeles,,Calif.
"Early in life Mrs. VanCleave chose Christ as her Saviour and guide. She united with the A.C. Church at that time active in her neighborhood. Mrs. VanCleave was a conscientious Bible student. She loved God's word and sought, in her quiet modest way, both to live it and to instill its teachings into the hearts and minds of others, as well. She was especially fitted to teach the young. For years she had charge of the juniors in the Sunday School in Reamsville. Her loyalty to these scores of boys and girls - both as friend and teacher of the Bible lessons - will throughout the years to come be a monument to her memory.
"While in poor health, much of the time for a year or more, Mrs. VanCleave bore her growing weakness with good cheer and a surprising courage. She went down in the valley, calmly - with a smile and a confidence that bespoke her faith that underneath were the "Everlasting Arms."...obituary notice.
