Mr. Madigan was well known as a lawyer of eminence, as a public man conspicuous for his integrity and devotion to principle, and as a citizen always true to duty.
He was born at Damariscotta [discrepancy], in this State, in the year 1821. He received his early teaching in the public schools, and his college education at Catholic College at Georgetown, in the District of Columbia. His first legal studies were pursued under the direction of the accomplished Edward Kavanaugh. Before completing his legal studies he was appointed by the Governor of the State to the superintendency of the schools in the French settlements in Northern Aroostook. In the performance of his educational duties and in the practice of his profession, he resided at Madawaska for several years, when he removed to Houlton, where he has lived ever since, in the employment of the entire confidence of his fellow citizens and of a large and lucrative professional practice.
While he manifested the interest in public affairs which a good citizen ought, he never lost sight of the profession he loved. Early identified with Aroostook county, he was devoted to the advancement of the interests of his section, and by his personal influence in the State contributed largely to its prosperity.
In his death the bar mourns a distinguished lawyer, the State an influential and excellent citizen, and the community in which he lived a most loved friend. His home was beautiful, and to his family his loss is irreparable.
He died, as he lived, in the communion of the Catholic church, as a sincere, exemplary, faithful Christian."
