Marvin Harold Merrill was the son of Grant Merrell and Caroline Diehl. He was an Army veteran of World War I and family history states he fought in the trenches of France. Marvin did not talk about his time in the war as it upset him. Because of that, very little information has been passed down. Marvin's last name was originally spelled "MERRELL" but for some reason it was spelled MERRILL when he joined the military and that is the spelling that has been used ever since by his descendants.

Marvin married Nina Mae Schroeder on May 29, 1926 in Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas. They had 4 daughters and 2 sons. One son, Marvin Harold (Bud) would die young and be buried on his 11th birthday. Marvin and Nina would share over 50 years of marriage before Marvin's death.
