US Congressman, US Senator. Elected to represent Michigan's 5th and 7th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1869 to 1881. Also served as a County Judge in 1850, Member of the Michigan State Senate from 1855 to 1859 for the 26th and 31st Districts, Presidential Elector from Michigan in 1864, Delegate to Michigan State Constitutional Convention in 1867, Delegate to the Repoublican National Convention from Michigan in 1880, and United States Senator from Michigan from 1881 to 1887.
