Columbus was the son of William Henry Woodward and Margaret Jane Raines (William Henry's first wife, who died at 32).

Columbus led an adventurous life as a young man. Born in Texas, he grew up around farming and ranching. In his early twenties he was driving cattle between New Mexico and Fort Dodge, Kansas.

Somehow, he managed to meet Margaret Ann Donnelly, who, in 1880, was living in Manhattan. They married about 1885; exactly when and where is still a mystery.

He also met Margaret's two sisters: Eliza Jane Donnelly, and Agnes Donnelly. Eliza Jane remained single, but Agnes married John Jacob Schwab.

They all stayed close during their lives and moved across the country together.

Columbus and Margaret lived in: San Antonio, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Pueblo, Colorado; Lead, South Dakota; Ogden, Utah; and Salt Lake City, Utah. After Margaret died in Salt Lake City, Columbus moved to Los Angeles, California, where he died.

All of Columbus and Margaret's children also moved to Los Angeles in the mid-twenties.

Columbus and Margaret had three children together:

Mame (Mamie) Woodward (1886 - 1960)
James Price Woodward (1888 - 1941)
Thomas Newton Woodward (1893 - 1954)
