On 1 May 1898, Whipple Barracks, Arizona Territory; Hedrick M. Warren, a resident of Phoenix, enlisted as a Private with Troop B of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry (The Rough Riders). On 7 May, he was promoted to Corporal and transferred to Troop C, per verbal order of the Regimental Commander (Colonel Leonard Wood). On 17 May 1898, Camp near San Antonio, Texas; Hedrick M. Warren mustered as a Corporal with Troop C of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry. He was recorded as a native of Pueblo, Colorado; 21-2/12 years old (B: ~Mar 1877), 5 feet 9-1/2 inches, fair complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, and a rancher. His parent/guardian was identified as Martin Warren of Phoenix, Arizona Territory. From 7 to 19 June, he was sick in the hospital (likely in Tampa, Florida). On 13 June, the Rough Riders sailed from Tampa, Florida to Cuba without Hedrick. On 28 July, he was transferred to the hospital at Fort McPherson, Georgia. Malaria and Yellow Fever affected many of the Rough Rider soldiers. On 3 Oct 1898, New York City; Hedrick's unit mustered out of service, after the mandatory 30 day quarantine.
