The son of John & Catharine (Armstrong) Snow, in 1860 he was a cooper living in St. Thomas Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. C, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 24, 1861. He then enlisted in St. Thomas Township July 6, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 9 as a private with Co. H, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). On February 1, 1864, he re-enlisted at Chambersburg and mustered into federal service there February 4 with the three-year organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry as a private with Co. K. He honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.

He married Mary Ellen Landis in 1867 and fathered Alice [?] J. (b. @1868), John L. (b. @1870), Clara E. (b. @1871), Mary Elizabeth (b. 02/06/73 - married Ulysses S. Ricker), Margaret Catharine (b. 08/27/74), Harry M. (b. 06/11/77) and Ann B. (b. @1878). Cause of death is listed as a "cerebral hemorrhage (apoplexy)" with "chronic interstitial nephritis" a contributing factor.
