James was the son of Abraham Frank Ackerman and Sarah A. Gillian Rogers.

James married Margaret Miller Etchison when he was eighteen and she was sixteen. An inscription on a picture of Margaret reads:

"Married: J. M. Ackerman & the said M. M. Etchison was united in the holy bonds of matrimony on the banks of the Red river by the Reverend W. R. Manning on Ocober 7, 1887 in Big Indian Territory."

James and Margaret had thirteen (or fourteen) children; the first seven children were born in Texas, all the rest were born in New Mexico.

Margaret and James' children were:

Eddie Rogers Ackerman (1888-1964)
Abraham Frank Ackerman (1891-1925)
Sarah Annabelle Ackerman (1892-1980)
Margaret Mae Ackerman (1894-1984)
Bessie Lee Ackerman (1896-1981)
James Hamilton Ackerman (1898-1966)
Georgia Elizabeth Ackermsn (1900-1990)
William Robert Ackerman (1902-1980)
Louise Marie Ackerman (1903-1986)
Harry Humphrey Ackerman (1905-1967)
David Manning Ackerman (1908-1981)
Josephine M. Ackerman (Feb 1910- )(only record:1910 census)
Evelyn Marie Ackerman (1910-2000)
Frances Ackerman (1912-1952)

When Margaret died in 1913, she left thirteen children ranging in age from 25 years to nine months.

After Margaret's death, James went to work in India and then moved permanently to California. He left the children to raise themselves.

He later married, or just lived with, two other women: Minnie, who died in 1938, whose headstone is by James' unmarked grave, and Mabel, who was named as his current wife on his death certificate.
