Born to Lafayette and Sarah Leach King in Macoupin County, Illinois, Laura Alice King was the oldest of five children. Her siblings were Nellie (Hemphill), Lyman Lafayette, Edward and Lottie (Clickner).

She married Herman Rittger in Christian County, Illinois on Feb 23, 1888. They were the parents of five children: William Walter, Lois Lillian, Harry Harris, Awanda Agnes and Edward Everett Rittger. William and Harry died as infants.

Laura died of throat cancer and was buried Christmas day.
