Lenny Forreider was one of two inductees in
the Ironworkers Hall of Fame. The article about him appeared in the Petoskey News-Review on August 23, 1996. Mr. Forreider started doing iron work after returning from WW II. He retired in 1980 after working on other sites (besides the Mackinac Bridge). He worked at the Big Rock Nuclear Plant and the Medusa Cement Co. After the Mackinac Bridge was complete he and his wife, Mabelle, and their children, settled in Carp Lake, Michigan. Most of his iron worker skills he learned through co-workers and trial and error. "You don't, however, want to have too many errors though,," he said, "or you will be in the obituary column." Incredible coordination and bravery helped the iron workers from around the nation raise the five mile bridge connecting Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. Five men died in one of the worlds longest suspension bridges. The induction was part of the International Ironworkers Festival held in Mackinaw City, August 23-25.
