Jake Edward Backer, 78 years old, a native of Fulton, died at 10:40 o'clock Thursday night at his home at 906 Nichols Street after an illness of several months. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock at the Maupin Funeral Home on Court Street by the Rev. L. A. Taylor, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Backer was born December 7, 1861, in Fulton, the son of John and Kathryn Gates Backer, natives of Germany. He lived his entire life in this community. He was married in 1891 to Miss Jennie Taylor, who survives. He also leaves on son, Orvid Backer, of Fulton. Another son, Hermann Backer, died January 20. There are also two brothers; Philip F. Backer and Fred Backer, both of Fulton. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Friends of the family regret to learn of his passing.
