Our community was saddened Friday, June 8, 1928 to learn of the death of Job L. Garland, at his home in Ayr Township near McConnellsburg. He died from the effects of a paralytic stroke and had only been ill for about seven weeks.
Mr. Garland was a son of Abraham and Rhoda Garland both deceased and was born near Needmore, March 2, 1851, being aged 77 years, 3 months and 6 days.
He is survived by his widow, nee Ellen Barney, and one son, William R. Garland of York, Pa., and one daughter Mrs. Irene Karns of Cumberland, Md. Also the following brothers and sisters: Rev. W. C. Garland, Buffalo Mills, Bedford Co., Pa.; Mary Jane, wife of Alfred Peck, Warfordsburg; Rev. J. C. Garland, Needmore, Pa.; Jacob L. Garland and Aaron M. Garland of Franklin County and Ettie widow of the late Reuben Sipes, Harrisonville, Pa. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Mr. Garland was an active and loyal member of the Democratic party and was elected as Sheriff of Fulton County from Bethel township in 1915 serving as sheriff 1916-1920 and as deputy sheriff 1920-1924. He also served as Justice of the Peace in Bethel township. He was one of the county's best citizens, loyal to his friends, a kind and loving father and husband and a good neighbor. His death is a great loss to the community. For more than 50 years he was a member of the Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at Cedar Grove Church, Sunday, June 10th in charge of Rev. H. L. Jarrett of the M. E. Church of McConnellsburg, assisted by Rev. A. R. Garland.
