Mariah Arrowood was born in the tiny town of Pigeon Roost, in Mitchell County, North Carolina. She married a Free Will Baptist minister and raised her family. They moved from Mitchell County to Dial, Fannin County, Georgia in the year 1901.

Her father, Samuel, died at an early age and she, being the eldest daughter, was about 12 or 13 when he passed. Her mother was Sarah Ellen Winters Arrowood. Sarah Ellender is remembered through the writings of Harvey James Miller, "the Sage of Pigeon Roost", as is Mariah's husband, Rev. Joseph Honeycutt "Hunnicutt".

Harvey was the nephew of Nora Barnett Arwood. Nora was the wife of John Henry Arwood, the youngest brother of Mariah.
