Merrill served in the Civil War along with his brothers; Silas Louis Wentworth and Albert Bingham Wentworth. Although none of them were injured, the war had a profound effect on Merrill. He rarely would talk about his experience in the war. He lived the later years of his life at the Vetran's Home at Yountville, he died there.

According to a letter written by his niece Hazel Brown Kennedy, Merrill came home from the war to find his girl had married someone else, that too had to give him reason to not speak of the war. One has to wonder if this happened as records attached to this memorial clearly show Merrill married, perhaps there was someone before Sarah whom he had planned to marry but who married someone else.

From the Massachusetts Town Records; Married Sarah J. Johnson, daughter of Andrew and Louisa Johnson, on 2 Sept of 1862 at Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. She of Lowell at the time of the marriage but born 18 years prior at Frankfort, Waldo, ME. Merrill is listed as a Carpenter at this time, aged 23, son of Jesse and Lydia, born Brooks, ME. This was the first marriage for both parties.

Enlisted at the age of 23 on 25 Aug 1862, serving in Company D Massachusetts 6th Infantry Regiment
Mustered out 3 Jun 1863 at Lowell, MA. At this time he lists his occupation as a blacksmith.
