Newspaper Editor, Commander of the United Confederate Veterans. Son of newspaperman Walter N. Haldeman. During the Civil War he served from late 1862 through early 1864 as a private in Co. G, 9th Kentucky Infantry, C.S.A. He then served as a midshipman in the Confederate navy serving on the James River and participating in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff. Haldeman then resigned from the navy and returned to his comrades in the "Orphan Brigade" for the remainder of the war. Following the war he was an editor for the "Louisville-Times" and a managing partner for the "Times" and the Louisville "Courier-Journal" until the papers were sold to Judge Robert W. Bingham. He served as colonel in the Kentucky National Guard from 1906-1909, Adjutant-General of Kentucky 1911-1912 and was a member of the state Racing Commission from 1914-1919. In 1924 he was elected Commander of the United Confederate Veterans. He died while attending the races at Churchill Downs.
