Shepard Goodwin Patrick was an attorney and farmer. He was admitted to the bar in 1841. He served as counsel for Joseph Smith in Dixon, IL when the Mormon leader was being persecuted and imprisoned there in July 1843. He married Phebe Shaw Feb 14, 1847 in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa. He was also a veteran of the Civil War.
